Sermon Title: Now, Part 4: Now May Be Uncomfortable

Main Text:  Matthew 19:16-22

Topics:

  • The Rich Young Ruler may have been a religious lay leader or even a Pharisee
  • He addresses Jesus with a term of respect - Teacher
  • Jesus tells him what to do to show he has put his faith in God
  • Jesus is not saying that works will save you, only that works will indicate whether you are saved.
  • Jesus knew he had an idol that needed to be removed
  • What are some idols? Money, Comfort, Possessions, Relationships, Routine
  • We must submit to Christ in order to follow him
  • Some examples of change or challenge that I have seen:
    • Personal:
      • Community Group Multiplication
      • Fostering kids
      • Mission Trips
      • Sponsoring Children
    • Church
      • Moving to a new facility
      • Launching Crossway
      • Going to 2 services
    • Kids Ministry
      • Deciding not to do VBS
      • Going to 2 Services
    • Student Ministry
      • Leadership Changes
      • Change of meeting days
  • We can’t love God with all of our heart and hold something back
  • Jesus is not telling us to sell everything we own, but if that is a relief to you you should re-evaluate your attachment to stuff
  • How do we do this?
    • Thoughtfully - seeking wisdom through scripture and others who have gone before
    • Prayerfully - seeking God and his leading
    • Wholeheartedly - moving forward once a decision has been made 100%
    • Reflectively - stopping to evaluate occasionally
  • It is a lifelong process to remove the idols that stand in the way of what God is doing in our lives

Key Questions:

  1. Was Jesus saying that his works could save him?
  2. What are some idols in your life that are standing in the way of pursuing Christ?
  3. Think about a challenge you have face where you had to put aside an idol but was glad you did
  4. What are you holding back that is keeping you from pursuing God?
  5. Does the idea of selling everything you won disturb you?
  6. Does the idea that we don’t have to sell everything we own bring you great relief?
  7. How do you thoughtfully evaluate where God is leading you?
  8. Do you find it hard to pray for and hear God’s leading?
  9. How do we wholeheartedly embrace something we are not sure of?
  10. When have you looked back to realize that something you thought God was leading you to do was not his leading?
