  • Men - we’ll be studying Judges for You by one of our favorites: Tim Keller. That will be every Monday night at 7 for the next 6 weeks.
  • Ladies - you’ll be studying Gideon by Priscilla Schrier. And ladies, you have two opportunities for the study: Wednesdays at 10AM or 7PM.
  • You can find more information about those studies in the bulletin.

Baptism Celebration

  • In just 2 weeks we are going to celebrate Baptism after both of our services.
  • If you haven’t been baptized yet, we would love to celebrate your baptism in 2 weeks on Sunday, February 22nd.
  • We have 2 baptism classes coming up: first on Thursday, February 19th and then we’ll have a special kids baptism class on Sunday, February 15th immediately following the 2nd service.
  • If you’re interested, let Pastor Dan know and plan on attending the Baptism Class.

Sermon Title: Humanity Hardwired, Part 1: Hardwired

Main Text:  Genesis 1:1-2, Rev. 4:11, Psalm 24:1

Topics:

  • Genesis 1 is making a simple but profound claim. God created everything. This is such a simple statement but it is so explosive because of the implications.
  • Some scientists are bent on finding a solution on the creation of the universe that does not involve God. But modern science seems to point to a beginning. And that in and of itself is very problematic, for someone wanting to perpetuate an atheistic worldview.
  • If the universe has a beginning then it must have a cause. We look around us and we see a constant flow of cause and effect. But if the universe was to go in reverse. What do we find at the beginning? Where did matter come from?
  • While there are many theories the most simple and obvious is that it comes an ultimate “Causer.” It is almost impossible to get around the idea that if the universe has a beginning then it has a Creator.
  • And even if some are not completely convinced of that necessity, it is certainly the most obvious answer based on our observations of this universe. No where else is there something that springs out of nothing.
  • God and science are not at odds. Science is just man’s fallible attempt to explore God’s creation.
  • But what if what seems to be scientifically proven seems to dispute what the Bible says. Our first reaction is to patiently explore without losing trust in the timeless word of God over the ever shifting theories of scientists.
  • As for Genesis 1, evangelical Christians have several interpretations. These interpretations all agree that the Bible is the infallible and inerrant word of God.
    1. Genesis 1 describes a literal 7 day creation.
    2. Genesis 1 is intended to be a poetic description and was not intended to be taken as strictly literal. Let the Bible indicate when something is poetic and when something is literal.
  • If God is our Creator then there are immense implications:
    1. We are wired for Awe - let nature stir up worship for who God is
    2. We are wired to Belong - if we are God’s creation, then He has rights to us
    3. We are wired as a Creature - we are not god, and when we act like a god, our lives short circuit.

Key Questions:

  1. HIGH/LOW: What was the high point of your week and the low point?
  2. ICEBREAKER: If there was one thing you wish science could invent what would it be?
  3. What are ways that you have seen science proven to be infallible?
  4. READ: Genesis 1:1-2
  5. What are the implications for one’s life, if this world is an accidental result of a developing universe?
  6. What are the implications for one’s life, if this world has been fashioned by a Creator?
  7. Do you think people have motivations for wanting to believe there is no Creator? What are some of them?
  8. What are ways that God’s creation stirs up your awe for Him?
  9. What are ways we act like we are the Owner?
  10. How does life short circuit when we do that?
  11. What are ways we act like we are the Creator and not like a Creature?
  12. How does life short circuit when we do that?
