Main Text: Nehemiah 8:1-12

TOPICS: (Not to be read or e-mailed to your group ... this is for the leader's review and recollection)

  • In chapter 8, the people of Jerusalem gather together. It is one of the first things they do as they are rebuilding the spiritual community as God’s people. We learn many truths about what it looks like for us to gather together as a church.
  • We come together because we BELONG to a GREATER WHOLE.
    1. Someone cannot follow Christ and then decide if they want to be part of the church. Once someone becomes a Christian, they are part of the church. They are a part of the body. They are part of the Bride of Christ.
    2. Whether or not they attend, is a matter of their spiritual health.
  • When we come together, we UNDERSTAND at DIFFERENT LEVELS.
    1. God’s people throughout history have been conscious of different levels of comprehension. This is why we set up different environments to contextualize God’s word, such as Kid’s Ministry and Student Ministry.
  • We come together because we NEED the SCRIPTURE.
    1. When we recognize our desperate need for God’s truth, we will take ownership of our own growth. We will actively listen and apply when we have an opportunity to hear God’s word taught.
  • When we come together, we are ACTIVE PARTICIPANTS.
    1. Our gathering is for all of us to participate in. The singing is a key part of that. It is where we declare scriptural truths together.
    2. Music is not just the previews before the movie. It is an essential part that we should choose to participate in.
  • When we come together, it is to be TRANSFORMED by the SCRIPTURE.
    1. It is the scripture that we come to hear and be changed by. Our hope is not simply that we will learn more about it. We are not collecting biblical data and interesting facts. We await the Holy Spirit to change us by it.
  • When we come together, it is to CELEBRATE.
    1. When we hear the truth of the scripture it may be convicting. But then we realize the redemption we have in Christ. When we gather together we celebrate the Gospel.
  • We come together FOR GOD.
    1. When we gather it is not first and foremost for us. It is not so that we can be blessed, or so that we can be fed. It is so that we can offer our worship to God.
    2. When we realize that, it reminds us that church is not a spiritual vendor that needs to align to my preferences.
    3. It reminds us that church is not for when we feel like we need it. It is a small way we can give worship to God.
